FRANKENSTEM HAD ME HOOKED WHEN I READ THAT IGOR WAS CONDUCTING SECRECT ILLEGAL FRANKENSTEM EXPERIMENTS ON UNSUSPECTING MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS!  FRANKENSTEM is WICKED FUNNY and SMART! It’s the first graphic novel to use the zombie apocalypse scenario, which is MAD GENIOUS! There is no better way to teach BRAIN SCIENCE to middle school students than using ZOMBIE BRAINS.

FRANKENSTEM is the perfect fit for today’s STEM/STEAM-interested audience. Nearly every school age library program I’ve offered in the past 6 years has been STEAM focused in nature. It seems the kids (and parents) can’t get enough of it! Certainly we have been able to offer a wide array of nonfiction titles to supplement those programs, but there has been a decided lack of STEM/STEAM fiction to feed the appetites of those elementary readers.
My school age kids would really love FRANKENSTEM, especially the 3rd-6th graders. I loved the humor –  and the very appropriate nod to Shelley’s Frankenstein creature. Also, it is so good to see a young female scientist lead.
The illustrations are definitely not typical of what I am seeing in graphic novels. The illustrations are edgy, surreal and a great fit for the story. That is a big plus for me! They reminded me of the classic movie- dark, lots of grey tones, a little out of focus around the edges. For me then, the use of color (electricity, fire, Victoria, etc.,) is even more effective and you immediately draw my attention to what you want me to focus on in the panel. FRANKENSTEM would be a great and fun addition to our graphic novels collection.

I cannot wait to use the graphic novel FRANKENSTEM with my class! Using engaging graphics, fun facts, exciting vocabulary and featuring kid appropriate items for science experiments will really build excitement for extra credit projects and science fairs!
This book will be a terrific way to mix technology, engineering, science and math together in an engaging way. I look forward using the online teacher's guide to really pique my students creativity and interest in science, engineering, technology and math. As a teacher, I really appreciate the opportunity to reinforce that you don't always succeed the first time!
